The Capitaine Fracasse viewpoint
On foot, the work impresses with its façade. From the water, its scale changes: the boat glides beneath the airborne mass, the arches carve out the relief, and the reflections extend the cave into the river.
The highlight: the approach to the bridge from the river, when the relief fills the entire view and the water doubles the cave.
Understanding the event
With La Caverne du Pont Neuf, JR offers an ephemeral reinterpretation of a major Paris landmark. The installation plays with the idea of a fissure, a passage, and a return to origins: stone, quarries, architecture, and the river.
The cruise is not meant to replace a visit from the quays. It adds a rare reading: the bridge seen from its natural level, the Seine.
1607
The Pont Neuf has established itself as one of the Seine’s great landmarks.
1985
Christo and Jeanne-Claude transformed the bridge with The Pont Neuf Wrapped.
2026
JR proposes a new metamorphosis, visible for only a few weeks.
On board
Le Capitaine Fracasse boards at the Bir-Hakeim bridge for a cruise past the monuments. During La Caverne du Pont Neuf, the outing takes on rare intensity: a set table, the river in motion, then this rocky mass emerging in the heart of Paris.
